Personal Narrative- My Dream I picture myself center stage in the most enormous and fantastically beautiful theater in the world. Its walls and ceilings are covered in impeccable Victorian paintings of angels in the sky. A single ray of light shines down upon my face, shining through the still, silent darkness, and all attention is on me and me alone. The theater is a packed house; however, my audience is not that of human beings, but rather the angels from the paintings on the walls come alive, sitting intently in the rows of plush seats. Their warmth encompasses my body, and I know at that moment that it is time to begin. I open my mouth. From deep inside my soul a melody flows out of my chest, off of my tongue, and finally†¦show more content†¦My whole world is aglow. For those precious moments, everything is right, and then I am alone. The angels have disappeared, yet the stage is still mine, and suddenly, from out of nowhere, a piano begins to play. I cant see it, but I can feel it in every cell of my body, and my voice again takes charge and rushes out to court the empty notes of the piano. The two become one, and never before have the theaters walls heard such awesome music. In this enormous theater, I am alone, but I have never felt so fulfilled in my life. I look out to the very last row of empty seats, but there appears a man. A moment of shock and fear is quickly overridden by a quieting peacefulness. The piano stops playing, leaving my voice the only noise in the arena. The melody I sing slows down to a soft and calm ballad that I sing wholeheartedly for the man, all the while with a locked gaze into the mans eyes. His eyes are a mirror. They show me myself. They show me my beauty - my beauty on the inside that I never allow myself to see. He shows me who I am meant to be. The ballad ends. There is silence, but a continuous locking of eyes. In 2009, the country was the 8th largest exporter ($363 billion) and the 10th largest importer ($323 billion) worldwide and the trade surplus amounted to $40 billion. As we mention it in the introduction, South Korea is suffering heavily from the lack of raw materials. As a consequence, the largest share of the imports consists in mineral products -1- (33%). In total, imports amounted to more than 323 billion in 2009 and the most of those imports came from China (23,9%) followed by the United States (10,4%) and Japan (6,0%). In 2009, Korean exports amounted to more than 43% the GDP, South Korea being the most dependent country on exports of the G-20 major economies. Electrical and electronic products represent the largest share of the exports (38%) followed by the sale of ships (14%). In recent years, chaebols (large industrial groups such as LG, Hyundai, Samsung, etc. ) have adopted a new export strategy aimed principally to emerging economies (South-East Asia, Africa and South America) at the expense of developed countries. The structure is therefore principally oligopolistic. Currently, chaebols are responsible of the majority of Korean exportations. This success has been made possible thanks to the creation of large industrial groups (the chaebols), the development of the infrastructures, the politics to acquire the highest technological know-how, the emergence of a high-skilled workforce and the massive expansion of exports. The destruction of slavery through Civil War vastly accelerated development of the industrial capitalism. According to Kral (1995), the Civil War was organized and led by Lincoln as a revolution element. This war was characterized by the general strikes among the slaves and their involvement as soldiers, helpers, and spies actively in the Union army. The blacks also made a decisive contribution in building up a movement of mass revolution that led the Civil War. Many of the black activists who were refugees in the South also initiated the abolitionist movement and maintained it during the 1830s and 1840s dark days. They guided it ultimately to the point where it gained popular influence significantly in the 1850s. Antislavery activists also stimulated and exacerbated powerfully the tensions between the South and North, and assisted in providing ideological standard to unite the forces that were struggling against slavery (Kral 200). After the shots of the Civil War, 150 years later, important lessons are learned. The perspectives that we have been traditionally taught on the extent to which white supremacy and racism permeated the society of America from its inception. This marked the end of slavery. Celia, a slave's more local, regional, global perspective differs from the perspective that we have been traditionally taught. Celia, a slave was in the perspective of an isolated incident that indicated common fear of slavery in the period of antebellum in the United States. The perspective of Celia on slavery is that of the struggle of young slave women through the undeserved hardships of injustice and rape. Celia perceives slavery as racial discrimination where the white males dominate the culture which looks down upon the African Americans, with females being the most oppressed. Although she does save Oliver, Dickens keeps the story realistic, when she is discovered to have alerted Mr Brownlow and Rose, Sikes clubs her to death. The one person that ever truly cared for him, who he constantly abused he eventually killed. Dickens based him on typical hardened criminals in Victorian England. Children in Victorian England were intensely used by adult gang members, as pick pockets, prostitutes and even in organised robberies. Once involved in crime there was no escape unless you were very lucky as Oliver was. Oliver is taught to pickpocket and winds up in trouble when he is thought to have stolen from a wealthy man when in fact it wasnt him. Mr Brownlow shows compassion and takes him into his home even though he has been wronged, this is an ideal that Dickens holds dear and tried to vent it through his writing even if he does make it comical when he ridicules the rich by comparing Olivers terrible illness and suffering to Mr Brownlows worrying for his health when he uses a slightly damp cloth. As the future begins to look bright for Oliver you discover that Fagin is not far and he wants Oliver back as he could be a danger to them, this is an example of the never-ending crime cycle in Victorian England. Oliver is captured and forced to help Sikes in a robbery where he is shot and then left presumed dead. Dickens uses this as an example of how harsh Victorian England could be Sikes and his gang had fled when it had gone wrong leaving anything that would slow them down.

The Creative Classroom When I was three years old, my parents and I made the most significant move of our lives– we moved from northern Ohio to my mother’s hometown in southern West Virginia. Many things about my life changed because of our relocation, but most significantly was my mom’s job. While in Ohio, she had stayed home with me, but once we came to West Virginia, she resumed her career as a teacher. Immediately, I was thrown into the school system. I remember being so proud that my photograph had been included in the 1987 Man Junior High School Yearbook– and I was just four. Since then, I have viewed the teaching profession through my mother’s eyes and consequently, the eyes of a teacher. I have seen the joy that comes with teaching as well as the frustrations, and I look forward to them all in my future as an educator. I consider my views of teaching to be realistic. I have seen firsthand the paperwork, confrontations with students, extra hours required, and the stress that comes with teaching. But, I have also seen a teacher’s entire day be turned around just because one student grasped a new concept. I have seen a student’s eyes sparkle when they discover something new. And beyond that, I have seen a teacher’s eyes sparkle when his or her pupil rejoiced in their newfound knowledge. I welcome all these experiences into my life, and cannot wait to make my own discoveries in my secondary mathematics classroom. Because of my observations of the education field and my own personal style, I feel that my classroom will best be served with a diverse group of philosophies including essentialism, perennialism, behaviorism, and social reconstructionism. Essentialism is the "back to basics" approach to education that concentrates on teaching primary skills to students. Essentialism tugs at the very heart of mathematics: in order to understand the more complex theorems and algorithms, you must first have a firm grasp of the basic principles of mathematics. I believe learning mathematics is both a step-by-step and conceptual process. With essentialism, I hope to highlight the step-by-step approach. In this, I will be constantly reviewing elementary mathematical concepts, building to a better understanding of the given concept and further building up to a more complex mathematical understanding. Reed’s family isn’t your typical scenario. His family is a â€Å"famous family,† a group of geniuses not known by their family’s last name but by each individual. The children even called their parents by their first names. They all had their own names, they were known by who they are not by the traditional way of saying, â€Å"Oh they are the Landers family. Geniuses lived not in a typical way of life. They were so focused on making the next big thing, that they never even spent family time together. Their house wasn’t full of fancy decorations, but actually quiet empty. They didn’t even have a dinner table. Geniuses weren’t social lights either, they never had people come over; they didnâ₠¬â„¢t keep up with all the tech savvy stuff either. They had no television or telephone. It was a genius household and it wasn’t to be diminished by electronic gismos. Reed accepted the way of life as a genius family.He realized that living without a telephone or refrigerator was natural for him. Didn’t even have a car. He was used to not living like society. He accepted this way of life, so simplistic and empty. He noticed that how they lived was very different than other people’s lives. He learned that society mostly was settled around two things: television and soft foods with tons of sugar. Living this way meant you didn’t sweat the small stuff, but to live for the work they do, not for things. Working at the motel allowed him to start having a little life. He learned new skills and liked being able to stand up on his two feet without his family’s lights shining down on him. I walk into my first period class at 9:29 right before the 9:30 bell rings for class to begin. My science teacher, Mr. Sherman, has to make an announcement to the class. He says, â€Å"I am assigning a five paragraph essay due at the end of the week about photosynthesis and cellular respiration. † I thought to myself, how am I going to write a five paragraph essay on photosynthesis and cellular respiration? But then again, all it takes is some research. To begin with, the process of photosynthesis starts with Carbon Dioxide, Water, and Sunlight. The Carbon Dioxide, Water, and Sunlight starts of by going in to the plant and makes its way through the plant and out. Its job is to convert sunlight energy into chemical energy. As the cycle is ending glucose (sugar), and oxygen come out of the plant and transfers into cellular respiration. This all takes place mainly in the leaves of the plant. Obviously, the photosynthesis cycle isn’t that complicated. Secondly, cellular respiration is the process when the glucose and oxygen that comes out of a plant then transfers into either a plant or animal cell. It allows organisms to use energy stored in the chemical bonds or glucose. The energy in glucose is used to produce ATP energy. Cells use ATP to supply their energy needs. Cellular respiration is therefore a process in which the energy in glucose is transferred into ATP energy. In addition, during the process of photosynthesis the carbon dioxide goes through the leaves and the water goes in the roots of the plant. The sunlight then hits the plant so that the carbon dioxide and water mix with the sunlight in side of the chloroplast where the light is trapped. The mixture then gives off a substance called glucose (sugar) and also oxygen. Then the glucose and oxygen transfer to a plant or animal cell . This is called cellular respiration which is when the chemical energy of â€Å"food† molecules is released and partially captured in the form of ATP. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins can all be used as fuels in cellular respiration. At the end of the cycle carbon dioxide and water is produced, then sunlight is added and put back through the process of photosynthesis. To conclude, by the end of the week it was time to finally turn in my essay. It only took a slight amount of research to come up with a five paragraph essay. Before, I thought I would never be able to wright it, but I proved myself wrong and I happily turned in my essay. As an overview, carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight are mixed and go inside a plant and glucose and water comes out. Then, the glucose and water goes in either a plant or animal cell and ATP energy is created and what comes out is carbon dioxide and water and then the cycle begins all over again.
